About Matt Johnston

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Matt graduated magna cum laude from the Florida State University School of Music with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in music with a certificate in bassoon performance. While at Florida State, he also studied the organ, flute, clarinet, and piano. After performing on the bass clarinet with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra for the 2002-2003 season, Matt made an appearance the following year in the bassoon section. Following graduation, Matt moved to Seattle, Washington to attend a musical instrument repair program at Renton Technical College. Currently, he performs as principal bassoonist of the Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra (PSSO), is the organist at Fairwood Community United Methodist Church, repairs flutes in his spare time and accompanies various theatre productions throughout the area among other things.

In 2006, Matt played the flute and bassoon for the World Premiere production of the theatre adaptation of Peter and the Wolf at the Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT). Most recently at SCT, he performed the American premiere of The Green Sheep during the summer of 2007. This production led to a collaboration between SCT and the New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street in New York City, where Matt travelled to perform the show in September 2008.

Matt's first time as soloist with PSSO came in 2010 when he performed in the North American premiere of Paul Carr's Double Saxophone Concerto. Later in the year, he performed with the Gentleman's Quarterly Flute Quartet at the the National Flute Association Convention in Anaheim, California.

(In case you are wondering, ‘Malejo’ is derived from taking the first 2 letters of Matt’s first, middle and last names).
